Our First Anniversary Give–Away

December 16, 2012

Today is the anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth in 1775 at Steventon in Hampshire. Visitors to the museum will be asked to join in our celebrations, as usual, by being offered a warming cup of coffee and a seasonal mince pie. And exactly one year ago we began this blog. So, to celebrate, we are going to offer a very easy competition with a rather special prize.

The rules are very easy. If you leave a comment to this post, then you will be automatically entered into a draw to win a copy the Chawton Edition of Sense and Sensibility  which has been especially commissioned by the Museum to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Sense and Sensibility in 2011.

2012-11-09 15.42.44

This edition includes a facsimile of the first edition of the book that was published by Thomas Egerton in 1811.  All three volumes are bound in one, and it has been published in a strictly limited edition of 500.

2012-11-09 15.43.10

The book comes in a beautiful presentation box, which also contains a reproduction of the Austen family seal, a feather quill, and a certificate of authenticity. In addition to all this, the Museum commissioned a foreword in the form of an essay about Sense and Sensibility written by Professor Kathryn Sutherland, of St Anne’s College, Oxford, who is the Museum’s Patron.  This is contained in a separate 20 page booklet which is also included in the presentation box.

2012-11-09 15.43.24

The competition will be open until the 17th January, 2013. You can add your comment until then, limited to one comment per person. The winner will be chosen at random by Louise West, the Museum’s Curator, on the 18th January and the result will be announced soon thereafter . We ought to emphasise that the competition is open to anyone who reads this blog, wherever you are in the world, for, we consider that if you take the trouble to read us, and to comment, you should be eligible to enter!

And now it only remains for us to say….Good luck!

Have you thought of including exerpts from Jane Austen’s own blog? Here’s an entry from December 16th 1816:
‘My dear Edward, I give you joy of having left Winchester. Now you may own how miserable you wre there…how often you went up by the mail to London an threw away fifty guineas at a tavern, and how often you were on the point of hanging yourself, restrained only, as some ill-natured aspersion upon poor old Winton has it, by the want of a tree within some miles of the city.’
Pity she shut down the lid of her computer every time she heard the door squeak.

What a great quote, thank you! I often think of Jane, when faced with an ironic or exasperating moment in my life or frustrated beyond words by some world event, how might dear Jane dissect, skewer, or otherwise lay bare the truth of the matter.

What an unbelievably gorgeous and generous give-away. All my Jane Austins are particularly well-thumbed and this would certainly be given a special place on my bookshelf. Congratulations on your full year of blogging (always a pleasure to read). From a damp Lake District come warm wishes for Christmas and the New Year to you all at the Jane Austen House Museum.

Jane Austen- who could laugh with us, at us, and around us so that we could too. Never intending more (no preaching) nevertheless in sharing her stories, she allowed us a safe glimpse of ourselves, relevant 200 years later. “…We are each of an unsocial, taciturn disposition, unwilling to speak, unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room, and be handed down to posterity with all the eclat of a proverb.” Pride and Prejudice, Cambridge edition, 2006, pg. 103. And so she did.

I am continually amazed at the elegance of these blogs – (such a stumbly word~) – and the Austen humor as well. How Ms/Mr Wakefield finds time to sleep though is the most curious part of these wonderful e-visits. Where is there posted a hint at the history, impetus and future of our narrator?

Well that certainly is a very generous prize! I still have a signed copy of sense&sensibility that the two actresses signedwhen they gave a talk about their experiences when making the bbc version of the book which in my opinion was far superior to the hollywood movie version.
I love visiting the museum and going to the events throughout the year. Also to chawton house when they have events as well. I can understand what captivated jane austen with chawton village and how the ambience helped her to write the books that the world now loves and reveres. Looking forward to the pride & predjudice events in 2013. Pride & Prejudice 200 website covers all events everywhere in this special 200th Anniversary.

My husband and I toasted champagne flutes to Miss Austen’s birthday tonight. Yes, he actually joined me with pleasure! I sure would like to be in Chawton today to be in her home on her birthday. I would also love to be visiting her Steventon church, St. Nicholas? I know that was her church in Chawton. I would also love to make the short journey to Winchester Cathedral to visit her gravesite. Her life and ineffable need to write has given me so much joy and will continue to. I’ll also say that I have had the pleasure of visiting all of the above mentioned except for the Steventon church. My husband took me to the “Jane Austen sites” but didn’t know to include Steventon. I am so grateful for the memories of that trip. They are indelibly imprinted on my mind.

Jane, how I wish I would have known you. To be able to converse with you face to face, and hear your wit. I sometimes wonder if I would have appreciated you then as I do now. To be able to have heard you comment on today’s society, I know you would have nailed the customs of today’s world with great wit. Happy birthday, dear Jane

My son and his wife live and work in Hampshire, so when I stayed with them in August 2012 a trip to Chawton was at the top of my wish list of places to see. When I was at Durham University 40 years ago training to be a teacher, I wrote a thesis on female writers of the 18th and 19th centuries, and became an avid reader of Miss Austen’s books. I visited Bath and gathered information and photographs for my studies, but never had the opportunity to visit Chawton. I was enchanted by the house, its beautiful garden and the wonderful gift shop, as were my son and daughter-in-law. I do hope I will be able to visit again when I next visit my family.

What a superb edition – I would, like others, love to have it in my Jane Austen collection. I remember (rather enviously, I must admit) seeing it advertised when first published. Here, in Canberra, Australia, I have attended two celebrations in honour of Jane Austen’s birthday – a lunch with the local Jane Austen Society of Australia members, and a high tea with a U3A group which discusses her work. Next month Susannah Fullerton will launch her ‘Pride & Prejudice’ book in Canberra – so it’s a feast of JA!!

But two years ago I entered your Chawton bedroom dear Jane Austen. No-one near but your presence. Did I feel you rise from your fireside place gently pulling your shawl about you? Were you beside me as I looked out of the window towards where your donkey cart is stored which I had touched briefly? Had you called from that casement in laughter and joy? Did you sleep well in your curious bed? The piano I played downstairs may have had its’ keys touched by you. To hold a facsimile of your S&S would be an utter joy!
