Mrs Jennings’ Hat

February 21, 2012

This hat, below, was worn by Linda Bassett in the adaptation of Sense and Sensibility which was first broadcast in 2008 by the BBC.

She played the character of Mrs Jennings.

This is a view of the crown of the hat, profusely decorated with a trimming made of pleated silk.

Her hat is very extravagant, with an embroidered veil.

The body of the hat covered in maroon velvet, and is trimmed with white trefoils.

Perhaps this confection was created to contrast with the cool elegance of  the hat worn by Claire Skinner as Fanny Dashwood, and to reflect the warmth of Mrs Jennings’ character, as opposed to Fanny’s cold and calculating persona ?
