We would love to hear from you, so if you are interested do apply to us with your C.V. and covering letter, stating your suitability for this internship,  all to arrive no later than 5p.m .on Friday 20th January 2012 by email to louise.west@jahmusm.org.uk

or by post to:

Louise West, Curator, Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton, Alton, Hampshire, GU34 1SD

In November 2011 the Museum was pleased to be able to accommodate the latest in a long line of  Year 10 Work Experience Students.

Darcy, who is a student at a local school, worked at the Museum for a week after applying to us. As she is interested in a career that combines the subjects of History and English Literature she thought working at the Museum was a perfect opportunity to combine her two enthusiasms.

During her time with us Darcy helped conduct school groups around the museum, searched for suitable quotes of the week which were added to the Museum’s website, helped with making group bookings, manning the busy phone lines and she also helped out in our well-stocked shop.

Darcy, whose favourite Jane Austen novels are Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey, thoroughly enjoyed her time working behind the scenes at our busy museum. She told me that she will always fondly remember the random conversations about Jane Austen, her books and her characters ,which naturally occur whenever two or more Janeites congregate together. It was by joining in and listening to these that she learnt an awful  lot about the Museum, Jane and her world. Which is, after all, our aim 😉

What a fun job! It sounds like the kind of work I’d LOVE to do, if I were several decades younger, but I’m not 😦 I hope the lucky person applies soon!
