The New Chawton Edition of Sense and Sensibility

December 22, 2011

As you are most probably very aware, this year saw the first of many important Jane Austen related anniversaries with the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Sense and Sensibility.

Her other five competed novels-Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion– will be reaching their 200th anniversaries over the next seven years, and the Museum will be commemorating them all, together, of course, with the very important 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death in 2017.

As part of these celebrations, the Museum has embarked on a very interesting project, which is to publish all six of Jane Austen’s completed novels in a unique way.  The New Chawton Edition of the novels are photographic facsimiles of first editions held in the Museum’s collection.  The first to be issued  is Sense and Sensibility, and it is a facsimile of a first edition of the book which was published by Thomas Egerton in 1811.  All three volumes are bound in one, and it has been published in a strictly limited edition of 500.

The book comes in a beautiful presentation box, which also contains a reproduction of the Austen family seal, a feather quill, and a certificate of authenticity.

In addition, the Museum has commissioned a foreword by Professor Kathryn Sutherland, of St Anne’s College, Oxford, who is the Museum’s Patron.  This is contained in a separate 20 page booklet which is also included in the presentation box. Each boxed edition costs £150 and they are certain to become  much sought after collector’s items.

If you would  like to purchase one of these very special books you can do so by visiting or contacting the Musuem’s shop by telephone on the following number: 01420 83262

or, alternatively, if you prefer, you can order it online here from the Museum’s online shop.

Oh, this would be lovely to have, but it’s a little too steep for me, unfortunately. Just as well, I guess. I already have 3 different editions 🙂 Thanks for telling us about it, though!
